We ask Newtown City to amend the building code so new commercial construction over 10,000 square feet must use reflective (high-albedo) roofing materials, reducing urban heat island effects across the downtown core.
Why this matters
Dark roofs soak up heat and push summer temperatures downtown several degrees higher than in leafier areas. Light-colored roofing costs about the same and keeps whole blocks cooler.
